By honoring the fiftieth anniversary of Max Miedinger and Edouard Hoffmann's design Helvetica, the MoMA has put on an exhibition featuring poster, signage, and other graphic material demonstrating the variety of uses and enduring beauty of this design classic. As a special feature in the exhibition, an excerpt of Gary Hustwit's documentary Helvetica reveals the typeface as we experience it in an everyday context.

Cut&Paste Digital Design Tournament Series comes to Los Angeles where eight desighers will have the opportunity to showcase their talent and compete in three, single-elimination rounds. Other cities included have been Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Portland, San Francisco, Berlin, Hong Kong, London, Sydney, and Tokyo.
Their work will be webcast globally and projected in real-time for the live, Cut&Paste audience. Onsite and offsite viewers may vote online or by SMS to award an Adobe® Creative Suite 3 Master Collection Suite to the winner of the Audience Prize.

Holiday In Space
April Greiman of Made in Space and Aaron King and Jason McCabe of Holiday Design would like to invite you to "Holiday in Space," this fall’s Designer Meet-Up. The event is at everybody's favorite pirate bar The Redwood (if you have not been, it's worth the trip just to see the bar). Though The Redwood has a full bar, it is primarily a restaurant, so attendees need not be 21. We will provide some snacks early. Happy hour prices on drinks and food run through 7PM. RSVP is mandatory and you MUST submit a 600h x 800w jpg image of yourself on a "Holiday In Space" (what that means is subjective) by November 13 to attend. A slideshow of the images will be shown at the event.

Logomania
The past few weeks we have seen two small but interesting public controversies involving design. The first was the Navy’s decision to make architectural modifications and do a little landscaping to mask the fact that it’s barracks that serve Seabees has the foot print of everyone’s most hated logo, the swastika. The building was built in the 60s but it birds eye view foot-print had never been seen by the public until images starting appearing on Google Earth. The stories on blogs and the press have focused on the issues of privacy but I am still stuck on the fact that the Navy, arm of the military that overpowered and conquered the regime that reduced the swastika to a symbol of all evil overlooked such an obvious icon. Its rather ironic or its just classic government lack of foresight
The second controvesy has been brouhaha raised over Google’s honoring the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik. Conservatives are upset because Google decided to honor a world event that was accomplished by a former communist world power, by tweaking their logo that contained the spacecraft Sputnik. They say Google honors the enemy and but doesn’t do the same for US holidays such as Memorial day. This is a misguided complaint because it doesn’t recognize who Goodle is. Most of us wouldn’t be using the word google if it weren’t for the space race that Sputnik and the Apollo program put on. Google, the company owes its existence to both space programs and their exploration. Google should be tweaking its logo on the anniversary of every major launch of a spacecraft. We shouldn’t forget that with out Sputnik and the Apollo program we would have never found out that the Navy has buildings shaped like swastikas.
